(Full School Year Season / September – June)

Membership in this organization is selective, and open to all students from grades 9-12 through auditions given in the spring based on openings in the ensemble. The ensemble rehearses weekly and represents Somerset Berkley Regional High School at various festivals, competitions, and performance sites during the school day and after school hours throughout the year. All instrumental members of the Jazz Band must be a member in good standing of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and/or Concert Band; vocal members must be a member in good standing of any choral ensemble.

BAND App. The SBRHS Music Department will continue to use the BAND app to disseminate all information quicker and more efficiently to you! Documents, calendars, weekly announcements, and up-to-date information will be available now in this one application rather than checking weekly emails or paper documents. The BAND App is completely free to use! You can download the BAND App on your iPhone, Android devise, or access it on your computer by going to band.us. I suggest that you set it up on a computer first and then download the app once you have an account established. The names of our BAND groups are listed above. Everyone should be part of the Friends of Music BAND app group as weekly announcements for the department will be posted there. The 2019 Somerset Berkley Regional High School Jazz Band Festival

“The Somerset Berkley Regional High School Jazz Band Festival provides a non-competitive festival experience for local high school Jazz Ensembles to come and perform for each other as well as to receive critique and suggestions for improvement from a professional jazz musician.”

The tentative schedule is as follows:
4:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. : Meet and Greet Clinic with clinician for all participating students and attendees.
5:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. : Jazz Bands perform on the ½ hour and will be critiqued by the clinician.

Admission:
$5 for adults / $3 for senior citizens, non-participating students and children

We are proud to announce this year’s clinician is saxophonist

Mr. Edmar Colón 

Edmar Noé Colón Gierbolini

Edmar Colón is a saxophonist, pianist and composer from Coamo, Puerto Rico, currently living in Boston.

Edmar Colón was awarded the prestigious Presidential Scholarship and graduated from the Berklee College of Music with a dual major in Performance and Classical Composition. As part of his undergraduate studies, Edmar was a student at the Berklee Global Jazz Institute directed by Danilo Pérez and Marco Pignataro.  He went on to complete his Master’s degree in Global Studies at the Berklee Global Jazz Institute.

Edmar has toured and played in venues and events such as the Detroit Jazz Festival, Puerto Rico Heineken Jazz Festival, Toronto Jazz Festival, Panama Jazz Festival, Montreal Jazz Festival, and Monterrey Jazz Festival, among others. He recently played in the Kennedy Center for the Arts Mary Lou Williams Jazz Festival, Abbey Lincoln tribute tour with Grammy-award recipients Terri Lyne Carrington, Esperanza Spalding, Dianne Reeves and Dee Dee Bridgewater.  Colón has performed with artists such as Joe Lovano, John Patitucci, Danilo Pérez, Danny Rivera, Hal Crook, Kenny Werner, Lionel Louke, John Michel Pilc, Patti Austin, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Ledisi, Judith Hill, David Sanchez, Arturo Sandoval, George Garzone, Luis Enrique and Ivan Lins, among other notable artists of various musical genres.  He has written and arranged music for Terri Lyne Carrington, Esperanza Spalding, Danny Rivera and The Harvard University Orchestra, among others.

In 2016, Colón was awarded the Latino 30 Under 30 Award New England from the El Mundo newspaper.  He was also awarded first prize at the “Keep An Eye” International Jazz Awards in Amsterdam as a part of the Berklee Global Jazz Institute.  In 2017, he was honored in the annual Patron Saint festivities of his hometown of Coamo, Puerto Rico.  Saxophonist, pianist and composer Edmar Noé Colon Gierbolini, is an upcoming bright voice of his generation.
