JAZZ BAND – Mr. Russell

(Full School Year Season / September – June)

Membership in this organization is selective, and open to all students from grades 9-12 through auditions given in the spring based on openings in the ensemble. The ensemble rehearses weekly and represents Somerset Berkley Regional High School at various festivals, competitions, and performance sites during the school day and after school hours throughout the year. All instrumental members of the Jazz Band must be a member in good standing of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and/or Concert Band; vocal members must be a member in good standing of any choral ensemble.

BAND App. The SBRHS Music Department will continue to use the BAND app to disseminate all information quicker and more efficiently to you! Documents, calendars, weekly announcements, and up-to-date information will be available now in this one application rather than checking weekly emails or paper documents. The BAND App is completely free to use! You can download the BAND App on your iPhone, Android devise, or access it on your computer by going to band.us. I suggest that you set it up on a computer first and then download the app once you have an account established. The names of our BAND groups are listed above. Everyone should be part of the Friends of Music BAND app group as weekly announcements for the department will be posted there. The 2018 Somerset Berkley Regional High School Jazz Band Festival

“The Somerset Berkley Regional High School Jazz Band Festival provides a non-competitive festival experience for local high school Jazz Ensembles to come and perform for each other as well as to receive critique and suggestions for improvement from a professional jazz musician.”

The tentative schedule is as follows:
4:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. : Meet and Greet Clinic with clinician for all participating students and attendees.
5:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. : Jazz Bands perform on the ½ hour and will be critiqued by the clinician.

$10 for adults / $5 for senior citizens, non-participating students and children

Mr. Mark Berney

Hailed as one of New England’s finest and most musically diverse trumpeters, Mark Berney enjoys performing in a diverse range of musical styles including jazz, rock, ska, klezmer, and classical.

Berney is committed to music education. He is a licensed Music Educator in Massachusetts (K-12) and serves on the music faculty at University of Rhode Island and Marshfield Public Schools. A multi-instrumentalist, he is also the owner of Music @ Mark’s, providing private music instruction on trumpet, piano, and guitar in Sharon, MA.

While still attending the University of Oregon, he performed under the batons of Marin Alsop and Helmuth Rilling and appears on the platinum album, Zoot Suit Riot: The Swingin ‘ Hits of the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies.

Berney is cornetist for the Klezmer Conservatory Band. He has recorded two albums with them on Rounder Records, including A Taste of Paradise (2003) and Dance Me to the End of Love (2000), which received five stars from Downbeat magazine. He has toured with violinist Itzhak Perlman, collaborated with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, appeared on CBS, Fox, and PBS, and performed concerts in prestigious venues including the Lincoln CenterHollywood Bowl and Carnegie Hall.

In 1999, Berney began his association with the Grammy-nominated Skatalites. He recorded on their 2000 release, Bashaka, and has toured with them across the U.S., Canada, U.K., Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Slovakia, Finland, Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic, and Jamaica. He has performed with Aretha Franklin and toured with Grammy nominee Mighty Sam McClain, Chandler Travis Philharmonic and performed at Jamaica’s first blues festival with Toni Lynn Washington in 2002. He appears on recordings with Babaloo, Cha Cha Cha Allstars, Pressure Cooker, and Soul Shot. Also committed to music education, Berney completed the Teacher Certification Program at URI in 2006 and is also a licensed kindergarten through grade 12 music educator in the state of Massachusetts.
